Large & Small
My dear friend moved to Connecticut. On her way out of New Jersey, she gave me lots of paper from her studio. She no longer paints, sadly. She gave me wonderful RIVES 100% cotton paper 22” X 30”. Oh my! Wouldn’t it be fun to work large? I haven’t worked this large in years, but it’s like that: you get this internal feeling that you just got to do it. Paint a larger-than-life watercolor iris. Every year, I visit Presby Iris Park to view the multitude of irises. Every imaginable color is present. I love getting close to these flowers. They are sexy, expressive, emotional, and abstract. I am mostly drawn to their inner landscapes. There is an entire world in the center of all flowers. Inside the iris, I see other worlds. Enlarging the iris I hope to bring attention to this inner world, to show the power of this gorgeous fleur d’iris.
I will be participating in the SOMA Art Studio Tour at 1978 Maplewood Art Center along with six other artists on Saturday and Sunday 11-5, Nov. 2nd & 3rd. There are almost 60 artists in the tour around South Orange and Maplewood. Please visit SOMA Art Studio Tour to view maps and artists.
Please visit me and my Iris you see above at The Herb + Milly Iris Gallery.
The opening is this Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024 at 6pm. If you are not able to make it, the show is up until Nov. 10.
In contrast to the above large painting, I have painted three small 5 x 5 inch paintings for the 5 X 5 annual show at the Green Door Gallery in Millburn. It is still up till the end of the month. When painting small, Indian Miniature Paintings come to mind. They are intimate and precious. Orchids are part plant and animal, animated, expressive, and beautiful. They have always felt alien to me. They, too, invite me into their worlds.
